In case you haven’t figured it out yet, the best places to discover smaller live, independent or local bands in Gothenburg aren’t (usually) the “official” bars and clubs on town.
Due to a set of Draconian laws which prevent any spontaneous dancing, unauthorized music, or human cultural expression after a certain hour — such activity is pushed underground.
I have In fact been told, personally, by more than one bar-owner, a strikingly similar story :
”Well, we tried to host live music, once — then a neighbor complained.”
After which, one complaint simply shut down the entire event, whether or not 30, or a 100 citizens of the community had been gathering to enjoy it. ..Because God forbid one crotchety, Scrooge-like character with a 3-room apartment that overlooks a notorious party-street downtown might have to keep a set of ear plugs handy.
Long story short — Truck Stop is one of *the* places to go if you care about more than booze and snus (not that either amenity is frowned upon) where the music lives on.. ..but you do need to be a member! (The membership makes it a club, see... Which makes it ”legit.” which, in turn, allows them, as an organization, to do such things as dance with no permit, and stay open late (which means they automatically thrive, even if located more or less off the beaten track, say... in the warehouse district, for instance.
The bands onstage are mostly heavy but there are other innovative types of nights, including performance art and indie, even with internationally touring artists. (I saw a good one from Japan). First step: go to their website, become a free member. (Make sure all your friends do that before leaving). Then you’re in like Flynn, son!
