A historic bell that has some interesting history behind it. The bell was cast in 1588 by order of wife of King Johan III Gunilla Belke, as there is a corresponding inscription on its rim. The bell was intended for the chimes of the castle Church, and for more than a hundred years it struck the time on the South-Eastern tower of the castle. In 1702, a significant part of the castle was destroyed by fire and a belfry was built for the bell on the Stirbiscop Bastion. The bell rang early in the morning, announcing the start of a new day, and in the evening, after which the residents had to extinguish the fires and close the shutters on the windows.

The Gunilla Bell / Gunillaklockan, Uppsala The Gunilla Bell The bell was cast in 1588 and presented to the castle chapel by Queen Gunilla, wife of King Johan III. It hung in the southeast tower until 1702, when much of the castle was destroyed by fire. The tower was completely demolished and after a few years the castle chapel stopped holding services. The Gunilla Bell was recast in 1759 and placed on Styrbiskop Bastion in its current bell tower to act as a curfew bell. Many Swedish towns had one to mark the start and end of the curfew. When it was rung in the evening, the day was over and the citizens had to go home and rest, closing their windows and doors. The nightwatch would also come on duty until the bell rang again in the morning to mark the start of a new day. Today, the Gunilla Bell plays a key role in the students' spring celebrations for Walpurgis Night. At 9 pm the students hold their spring addresses, followed by music from the Allmänna Sången choir.

It's just a bell. Its value lies on the historical aspects of why it is there and its relation with the castle and the cannons, so I'd recommend reading a bit of history on Uppsala in order to really appreciate it! The view from there, towards the Botaniska Trädgården, is really nice though.

The bell is next to a set of cannons, thus the place is call styrbiskop. The cannons aim towards the cathedral, signifying the king has power over the bishop. It is one of the few bells functional till date.
